California AB 1263 Website Compliance for Firearms & Sporting Goods
We’ve Solved it.
A Turn-Key Solution for Ecommerce and Modern CMS Platforms
California Assembly Bill (AB) 1263 introduces new compliance requirements for websites selling firearm-adjacent products into California — including accessories, parts, and components that were previously unregulated.
For many merchants, the challenge isn’t legal interpretation — it’s implementing compliant workflows on existing e-commerce platforms without disrupting conversion or forcing FFL-only fulfillment models.

What AB 1263 Requires (At a Practical Level)
As of January 1, 2026, merchants selling covered products into California must:
DisplayDisplay clear, legally required notices prior to purchase
CollectCollect and retain proof of age / identity before completing checkout
PreventPrevent circumvention of these requirements through standard cart or checkout flows
ApplyApply these rules only when required (e.g., CA-based customers or shipments)
For Ecommerce SaaS storefronts such as BigCommerce & Shopify, compliance must happen inside the storefront and checkout experience, not as a manual or post-order process.

Our Approach
Compliance With or Without an FFL Provider
Many proposed solutions in the market require:
- Mandatory FFL shipment for all California orders
- Dependence on a specific FFL provider
- Re-architecting product data or fulfillment logic
Our implementation is different.
Key Differentiators
Our approach makes it viable for firearms-adjacent retailers, not just serialized firearm sellers.
What the Solution Includes
Identity & Age Verification
- Secure ID upload (government-issued ID)
- Verification enforced before checkout completion
- ID can be attached to the customer record to avoid repeat uploads
Compliance Notices & Acknowledgments
- Modal or inline notices displayed on product pages, before add-to-cart and during checkout
- Fully customizable copy and placement
Platform-Native Implementation
- Built directly into BigCommerce
- Uses App Extensions and platform-approved patterns
- IDs viewable directly in the BigCommerce control panel
Conditional Logic
- Triggered by shipping destination, customer location, and product tagging
- No impact to non-CA customers or unrestricted products
